Rio Ferdinand explains football twitter

|

twitter CelticWhat’s Twitter all about then?

Who uses it, why do they do it and who cares about tweets?

If the captain of England and Manchester United uses it then it must be useful with Rio Ferdinand the king of the footy twitters.

As footballers become more and more distant from the supporters that hero worship them Ferdinand has grasped twitter as the medium to connect with supporters- and slag off multi-millionairre Robbie Savage.

The days of punters going to matches on a bus or train with players are long gone as the top players outscore team-mates with more and more expensive cars driven from their heavily guarded secluded mansions.

Contact is extremely limited but with well over 300,000 followers on twitter Ferdinand’s thoughts on anything from Kenny Miller’s fakebake to X-factor are instantly known.

A growing number of Celtic players are dipping their toes into the world of twitter with Marc Crosas and Ki Sung-Yeung regularly posting their footballing feelings and what they are upto in their social lifes.

A mis-placed rant would obviously cause grief for any player but for Ferdinand the banter of twitter is now an essential part of his life.

“I like to talk on current affairs,” the Manchester United defender explained. “And that can be anything from Corrie and X Factor to the North and South Korea conflict.

“It allows me to talk to the man on the street. It’s a way of communicating with fans. Importantly, it can right wrongs. A lot of people wrote things about my injury.

“I got on Twitter to put people right.”

With just 140 characters per message twitter is short and sweet with 175 million users, scribbling 95 million tweets a day. This year an estimated 25 billion tweets will be sent.

The new look Celtic website promises a twitter account from the club which will allow instant communication on all matters from injuries and postponements to commercial matters and signings.
