What next for Andy Gray- a six match SFA touchline ban?

|

Andy Gray Celtic NewsThere’s no more delicate issue in broadcasting or media in general than an -ism.

Just ask Andy Gray or Richard Keys.

Their ‘off-air’ comments on Saturday about assistant referee Sian Massey have picked up incredible momentum with the Sky Sports duo in real danger of losing their jobs- or an appearance in front of the notorious SFA Disciplinary Committee.

Sexism appears no different to racism with Gray and keys right in the firing line. Almost hour by hour the story moves on with Sky Sports removing them from the Bolton-Chelsea match, new footage emerging and Keys contacting Massey to apologise personally.

The whole episode seems a little bizarre with Keys and Gray known throughout broadcasting for their high levels of professionalism which explains why they’ve been relatively accident free in a high profile industry for 20 years.

On paper their comments seem fairly lad-ish- maybe a little risky- but there’s a seriousness to their tone that only comes over listening to the audio clip, especially when Karren Brady of West Ham is brought in.

Keys support of Coventry is well known, there’s no point in hiding it, while Gray’s affection for Everton and Aston Villa cause no one any offence.

Stepping over the banter border into an ism, sexism, however is a different matter and already causing ructions with both men taken out of covering the Bolton-Chelsea match and Keys contacting Massey to apologise.

Should the repercussions continue both men could be out of a job by the weekend with no other high profile broadcaster likely to touch such expensive but damaged goods.SFA likely to touch such damaged goods

    Andy Gray sacked at 4.30pm today.

    Seems like quite a few skeletons emerging, I’d expect him to be back broadcasting within a few months, not on his reported £1.7m Sky Sports salary however!

    How off-air comments work:

    Racist = sacking (Atkinson)
    Sexist = suspension (Gray & Keys)
    Anti-Irish = ??? (Nicholas & White’s potato humour)
