Fraser Forster ready for pitch battle

|

Fraser Forster Celtic newsFraser Forster is ready to tackle the worst surface in Scottish football at Fir Park today.

In midweek Motherwell lost 1-0 to St Mirren with the only goal of the game coming from an outrageous mud assisted deflection that left Darren Randolph helpless.

Forster has been well briefed on what to expect today and is focusing on keeping another clean sheet as Celtic chase the title.

“The pitch will be something different but with the quality we have in the squad we should be able to handle any conditions,” the keeper said confidently.

“Maybe we will hit the ball longer a bit more, it depends how the game goes. It is just about not taking any chances.

“We have the ability to come through and win so whatever the pitch is like it won’t be a problem.

“I haven’t seen the Darren Randolph goal in midweek but I have heard about it. It sounds just like one of those things. Obviously the pitch wasn’t great but it is something you have to get on with.

“Touch wood, I haven’t had one of those bobbled goals in my career and hopefully I never will.

“Freak things can happen and it is true that in a tight season that could make a difference. We just have to make sure that we make the ability we have got count. As long as we do that we should take any other variables out of the equation.”

Forster made his Celtic debut at Fir Park in September and kept a clean sheet as Celtic won 1-0 thanks to a second half penalty from Daryl Murphy.

That game came immediately after Celtic’s 4-0 defeat at Utrecht and the closure of the transfer window.

Making his debut alongside Forster was Emilio Izaguirre with both signings making a major impact on Celtic’s season.

That partnership will be broken up on Wednesday when Forster sits out the Scottish Cup replay with Rangers due to suspension.

After a nervy derby debut against Rangers in October Forster has kept back-to-back clean sheets against Walter Smith’s side in the SPL and admits that the special derby atmosphere is hard to comprehend.

He added: “I can see the attraction here, yes. It is an absolutely huge club and that was brought home with the Old Firm game last Sunday.

“You would do well to see an atmosphere like that anywhere in the world – let alone the Premier League. There are absolutely massive attractions.

“There are so many things going forward with Celtic and obviously the gaffer has come in and done really well here. He’s brought in a lot of his own players and they have gelled together.

“The team are definitely all going forward now. I think that playing first-team football has helped bring me on massively.

“This year and last year have been so vital for me so I just want to continue. This would also be successive titles for me. Hopefully that will happen.”

Get Forster signed. He has been solid and deserves us to at least make a bid. That Keiren Westwood form Coventry will be free at the end of the season, but Newcastle have been linked with him as well. (You can’t play ‘nearies’ in the Premiership!!!) If we get the ball rolling at least we know where we are so we can continue to box clever on the transfer market.
