Rod Stewart: You want to see your manager going nuts

Rod Stewart has gone on record to back Neil Lennon contrasting his street-fighter style to the statue like appearance of Tony Mowbray.

The rock star has been a fairly regular attender at Celtic matches this season and joined in the second half huddle during Sunday’s 4-0 win over Motherwell.

Speaking to TalkSport he said: “The point that you have to make (with Lennon) is that he has rebuilt the team completely in one year.

“And the fans love him because they have got pride, they are playing relatively attractive football in Scotland. I see the games week in week out, I’m not always there but I see them on tv and I’ve seen a vast improvement.

“Taking nothing away from Rangers, they’ve done well, but we’re only one point behind, still have a better goal difference and if we’d beaten Inverness Caledonian we’d have won it. It wasn’t our day and I had a feeling that was going to happen.

He added: “I want to support Neil, I think he’s wonderful.

“I don’t see it (the season) as a failure. I think he’s done very well in beating Rangers quite a few times this season and that counts for Celtic supporters.

“Also we have the Scottish Cup Final at the weekend so hopefully he’ll be taking home some silver.

“I for one am a big Neil Lennon fan and was right from the start.

“He’s a street-fighter, he shows his emotions, sometimes a bit over the top but we needed someone on the touchline like that unlike Tony Mowbray who was like a statue.

“If you’ve ever played football you look across to see your manager going nuts, you like that, you like that passion and I think that’s what the Celtic supporters love in him.

“That’s what I love in him and I think that’s what the players love as well.”

  • Pat O'Donnell says:

Rod phoned into the Adrian Durham drivehome show on Talksport in response to Durham’s view that the season had been a bit of a failure to Celtic and Lennon (excepting the off field abuse directed at Lenny which he described as shocking), and to come second to a poor team was failure.

Rod came across really well and passionate and is certainly a Lenny supporter.
