Peer Lawwell Celtic newsFive Celtic shareholders have been listed amongst the 100 richest people in British football- more than any other club.

Dermot Desmond, Denis O’Brien, Willie Haughey, Gerald Weisfeld and Jim Kerr are all on the list compiled by 442 magazine with a combined wealth calculated at just over £4bn.

Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan tops the list with wealth estimated at £20bn.

Seven other Scottish clubs have shareholders on the rich list but new Rangers owner Craig Whyte- who was reported to be a billionaire when he first showed interest in buying out Sir David Murray’s shareholding- fails to get a mention with the list going ‘down’ to those that have wealth of £20m.

O’Brien, with a £1m stake in Celtic, is reported to have combined wealth of £2.517bn and is listed as the seventh wealthiest man in football, four places ahead of Desmond whose wealth is estimated at £1.3bn.

Haughey makes it onto the list at 38 with Kerr at 77 and Weisfeld at number 86.

The highest placed non-Celtic Scottish shareholder on the list is Stewart Milne of Aberdeen at number 40 with wealth of £140m, one place ahead of Tom Farmer of Hibs on £136m.

Hearts owner Vladimir Romanov is next at 47 with wealth estimated at £100m with the other Scottish entries coming from Roy McGregor of Ross County (£85m), David Sutherland of Inverness Caley Thistle (£25m) and Geoff Brown of St Johnstone with £23m.

I see your old pals at the Scotsman/Evening News are at it again.

That Adam Morris, who wrote that piece about Celtic fans at Tyncastle on Sunday, said on twitter that he didn’t bother speaking to Celtic fans about the story as their views aren’t worth printing.

    Tight b****rd’s!

Time for a change at the top, they all might have money but no ambition for Celtic. Who cares if we,ve got no dept, we can’t celebrate having no dept. You can’t put a balance sheet in the trophy room.
    Hail Hail.

Very good point, what good is all that money to us when it’s held by people with nominal ambition for our club? I know it’s absolute bliss to laugh at Rangers debt and their potless owner, but realistically what’s worse? A skint owner spending nothing or billionaire owners spending nothing?

  • paranoidandroid says:

I dont know how they made their money, but they know nothing about running a football club, they know nothing about building a team.

Sack PL. A football team should not be run by an accountant. He’s got far too much power, and his only skill is lying to the fans. Does he even know what shape a football is ?

All that money and we operate on a shoestring! Makes you sick! Desmond and Co, with don’t you gtf!

  • John D says:

nothing will change unless the supporters force change upon the board.

it would appear that ‘we’ scream and stamp our feet until the next good performance comes along and then, pacified like wee wains, we clap our hands and sing along.

as long as the support has no real collective voice these people that are overseeing the decline of the club will continue just as they are.

make no mistake, there is always a tipping point, i’m not alone in thinking that the point is coming soon when the anger at whats happening turns to apathy and we’r back to the days of 25,000 at parkhead.

the key celtic sites have to liaise and organise a pressure group on this single issue – the performance of the board with regard to the performance on the park.

the board must be made accountable.

Our club is just a toy to Desmond and the rest of his cronies. Time for them to GTF!!
