transfer window Celtic newsRoy Hodgson has claimed that Rangers are in grave financial difficulty.

The West Brom manager was at the Celtic v Rangers game on Wednesday and has been linked with a move for Nikica Jelavic during the January transfer window.

It seems that half of the clubs in the Premiership have been linked with the Croatian striker but after witnessing Wednesday night’s action the West Brom boss won’t be taking his interest any further.

“Everyone is linked with Jelavic,” Hodgson explained to Sky Sports. “On the basis that Rangers are in grave financial difficulty.

“The Rangers manager has said that if they get a good offer for Jelavic, they’d have to sell, so I suppose we would join the list of the clubs that are going to be linked with him.

“It (the Old Firm match) was an opportunity to see the player everyone is talking about, but I don’t think our name would be at the top of that list as potential candidates for him.

“I can’t talk about the price they’re asking for Jelavic, I’ve no idea, we haven’t made any enquiries for him.”

The issue of Jelavic promises to dominate the transfer window with conflicting messages already emerging about the strikers situation.

“Somebody at the club had mentioned it to me before kick-off, which was all I needed to be frank,” McCoist responded on Wednesday night to reports that QPR had submitted a written offer for Jelavic.

“I haven’t heard anything else, that’s all, and they told me it was just a rumour.”

Thirty six hours later the story had changed as the Rangers managed explained on the club website: “There has been no bid for Nikica as far as I am aware.

“There was a rumour knocking about before the Celtic game and that was all it was and I haven’t heard anything to confirm or deny that rumour.

“I think that a radio report mentioned Queen’s Park Rangers but that’s all I have heard.

“Nobody has told me that a club has made an offer and I certainly wouldn’t want one.”

All the hype about jellyfish going, going where???

The media are talking more about Celtic players leaving, this just to weaken our squad everyday its another Celtic player in EPL managers list,

Joe you know they are more worried about us they still think that there club is safe,

Well you told us about Roy Hodgson telling all on sky, nobody from ipox defending statement,

    surprise surprise

  • Aldog82 says:

Roy Hodgson better watch out, Craig Whyte might try and sue him for saying that, lol!!!!!!

  • Ciaran says:

There were a few players likely to catch the eye on Wednesday night. Thomas Rogne had the 10million quid striker in his pocket. Vic Wanyama shrugged Davis out of his way like a rag-doll, James Forrest, Adam Matthews and even Big Samaras outshone any player in a blue jersey.

Any manager would have been impressed by what he saw. Jelavic, on the other hand looked no better than average. I would not swap Anthony Stokes for the Croat.

  • Aldog82 says:

Said to my mate when we left the game that they would defend jelavic by saying he can’t play up front on his own, but who in thier right mind would pay the sort of dosh that the laptop loyal are suggesting for a guy who can’t do a job up top on his own?

  • brian malarkey says:

any manager down south who pays any more than 3million for jelavic will end up with the sack

  • Stevie says:

The great SPL mystery if big jellyfish is worth 10 million what price Hopper scores more goals over his career so far and doesn’t take penalties is much younger and more mobile.
I’m sure the tax man will be watching every move the Whyte knight makes.
Well known fact that the shame are skint and hopefully will soon bo gone no matter what the Mankie Scottish media say or print.
    Mon the tax man.

All the talk of ALL these clubs in England’s top division is typical Scottish media, hoping to get more money for ‘them’ rather than a battle to pay the most it’d be more likely a race to pay the lowest amount. It starts at £10m by the time he goes it’ll be about £3 or 4m with lots of add-ons (atleast it’ll be reported as that).

Let’s be fair. The EPL clubs won’t base their assessments of jellyfish on one game. His record this season and last is decent enough to warrant interest from most. But this situation smacks of so many transfer deals from rangers in the past few seasons.

Whenever they get a decent player they try to put him in the shop wondow using the old reverse phsycology trick mentioning their name over and over and claiming they are going nowhere. Until that is, they have made enough noise to have someone actually watch them and buy them.

Think of these players are remember how they all left for money, some ridiculous money for their ability level, even though “they are going nowhere”. Kenny Miller, Carlos Celluar, Alan Hutton, Charlie Adams, Chris Burke, Barry Ferguson, Bougherra, all players rangers claimed were going nowhere, even before there was ever an interest in them.

It is there game to bring attention to their assets they want to sell. They must be kicking themselves on Adams!

They have tried this same reverse phsycology game on McGregor and now the big jellyfish, but no-one wants either of them. They are desparate to get the money and get these salaries off their books, so the games continue. Anyone interested in McGregor has looked at his off-field antics and decided not to bother.

If they saw his “deer in the headlights” look on Wednesday, they would also be wondering what he is on. This is just another reverse phsychology game from rangers, nothing more nothing less.

just seen scott cuthbert seen paul mcgowan against the huns we should be kickin oor selves

      • Joe says:

Sure, but respectfully these guys were unlikly to make the breakthrough with us. Some players need to move to get regular games, but the rangers players I mentioned were all first team players.

  • jimthetim says:

we bought willo flood when we had paul mcgowan there start showing some balls celtic ffs

  • Joe,

What you are saying is correct about putting their players in the shop window time and time again. They are bought for one purpose only, for selling on again but you have to admit they are good at doing it as they have sold a number over priced and/or with sell on clauses.it’s keeping the taxman at bay for now.
