Burnley move to sign former Celt

|

Danny Lafferty Burnley newsFormer Celtic defender Danny Lafferty is expected to complete a £150,000 deal to join Burnley from Derry City today.

The 22-year-old spent four seasons at Celtic from 2006-2010 and was released shortly after a loan spell at Ayr United.

After struggling to find a club he returned to his home town club and made a big impact in the League of Ireland.

In July he was selected for the Airtricity Select and played against Celtic in the Dublin Super Cup and is now poised to emulate James McLean in earning a move to England.

Lafferty was one of the victims of the short sighted decision to end the SPL Reserve league which left players too old for the u-19 league without any means of enjoying competitive football.

The 22-year-old left back impressed during a recent trial at Turf Moor and also attracted interest from Brighton, Derby County and Watford.

Last season’s youth team regulars are James Keatings and Lewis Toshney are expected to complete loan moves to St Johnstone and Kilmarnock.

  • O'Cahan says:

Danny has regained his form and confidence since joining Derry City, and has been the best wing-back in the League of Ireland.

What a shambles the SFA is, scrapping the the reserve league. Celtic brought Lafferty in as a 16 year old, and were forced to release him and others because Scotland has no reserve league.

At a time when Celtic were short of cover at left back and brought in a player on loan, at some expense may I say, Danny Lafferty in my opinion being a far superior player. Burnley’s gain is Celtic’s loss and at £150,000 it is problably a lot less than Celtic paid for our now departed loan player.

Surely it’s time for Celtic to apply to the SFA for permission to field a team in the 3rd division , they will not be able to gain promotion , but the benefits would be help all concerned, bigger gate money for the cash strapped clubs, give players coming back from injury more games to regain fitness, but most of all Celtic would not be forced to release promising players like Danny Lafferty.

    Good Luck Danny
