Paul Lambert Norwich newsAston Villa are expected to make an official approach to Norwich within the next 24 hours to discuss their managerial vacancy with Paul Lambert.

The former Celtic skipper has been linked with Villa since the closing weeks of the season but Lambert vigorously denied that he was on his way out of Norwich after last week’s testimonial match with Celtic.

News leaking in advance of an official approach is bound to anger Norwich after Lambert took the club from League One to mid-table in the Premiership in less than three seasons.

Whether Lambert would be interested in the Villa job remains open to debate. Martin O’Neill has helped his former skipper throughout his managerial career and left Villa on bad terms two years ago.

O’Neill was attracted by the promise of money being made available by incoming owner Randy Lerner but grew restless when the cash dried up as fans demanded an improvement on successive sixth place finishes.

Villa only just avoided relegation with Alex McLeish sacked within 24 hours of the season ending with Lambert instantly installed as bookies favourite for the job.

Former Manchester United star Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was flown in from Norway for talks with Villa but he opted to stay at Molde in Norway for family reasons.

Villa have also been linked to Wigan’s Roberto Martinez and Gus Poyet of Brighton but it now seems certain that an official approach will be made for Lambert.

With Brendan Rodgers expected to swap Swansea for Liverpool tomorrow the managerial merry-go-round looks to be kicking off just as the transfer window swings open.

Former Celt Paolo di Canio has signed a two year extension to his Swindon Town contract after guiding the club to promotion to League One.
