Paul Lambert Celtic newsPaul Lambert looked like he had found the challenge he was looking for as he was unveiled as Aston Villa manager.

Three years ago the former Celtic skipper was on his last chance in management at Colchester United after unspectacular spells at Livingston and Wycombe Wanderers.

As Lambert drove Norwich through three divisions there was always a hint of restlessness as the Norfolk club struggled to keep up with the ambitions of their focused young manager.

After the trauma of Alex McLeish’s year in charge of Villa Lambert has been given a warm reception by the supporters with the new man in the hot seat anxious to get hands on and push Villa back towards the top end of the Premiership.

“There is a lot of expectancy at the club and it is not something I’m going to shy away from,” Lambert explained. “It something I will thrive on, hopefully.

“We will try to get results as quickly and as best as we can. We have to play football the right way.

“We have to give the fans something. We will need them — I think they will come in their thousands to watch us and it is up to us to give them something back.

“I’m honoured to be manager of the football club. I will give it everything I’ve got to be successful.

“I can’t wait to get going, truth be told, so I’m excited by it. It is a huge, huge club and it is something I will need to embrace more than anybody.”

Lambert added: “I know last season was tough but the main thing was they stayed in the league which everyone at the club would have wanted them to do and I will do everything to try and help them.

“Once I get my feet under the table I can start to look at what’s going on and dig a bit deeper. I am really looking forward to it.

“There is a good feeling around the place and it’s up to me to try and keep that. As long as we give it a go that’s all we can ask. I will do everything I can to make this club successful.”

I have no doubts he can make them more successful than during Alex McLeish’s reign…but I feel he has made a mistake in jumping to early for a bigger club than Norwich. Villa are little more than a midtable side who will hover between 8th & 16th most seasons, might enjoy a wee cup run occasionally….not what I’d call a huge – huge club. Like Newcastle they can attract a decent crowd but unlike Newcastle they won’t stay loyal if results not going their way.

But he has learned his trade from the bottom up and will probably see this as another stepping stone to the top 6
