Greig SpenceGreig Spence can’t wait to face Partick Thistle today after Tuesday’s League Cup tie with Celtic.

The Fifers may have ended up on the wrong end of a 4-1 scoreline but the experience was priceless for the former Celtic youth.

For nine minutes on Tuesday night Raith were level with the SPL champions after Alan Walkers shot deflected off Kelvin Wilson into the net.

Gary Hooper went on to kill off any hopes of an upset but Grant Murray hopes that his side can use the experience to their advantage in Division One.

“Our manager was happy enough with how we played and pointed to the team that Celtic fielded,” Spence explained.

“In the last round Ross County made nine changes and Celtic weren’t going to repeat that mistake.

“Neil Lennon played a strong team and we certainly didn’t let ourselves down. It was a good experience for me and the whole team feels the same.”

Spence had a difficult time on loan at Hamilton last season but is enjoying life much better back in his native Fife.

“I wanted to pick the right club and feel that I’ve managed that,” he added. “I started my career at Alloa and knew that I’d have options once I left Celtic.

“At Hamilton last season the squad was mainly made up of young players in the same situation as I’m in trying to make their way in the game.

“Raith have got a few older more experienced players and I can learn from them.

“I had two great seasons at Celtic where I learned a lot, it was a great apprenticeship and I want to get back to that level in the future.

“You can’t help but learn when you are at a club like Celtic and it’s great to see some of the players I played alongside getting their chance.

“There’s a bit of luck and timing involved in football and it’s a good time now to be at Celtic.

“James Forrest was the first player in a while to make the breakthrough, now you have Tony Watt, Dylan McGeough and others getting a chance- and taking it- with the first team.

“My job is to help Raith Rovers and I’m enjoying my football, it’s good to be close to home and there’s a good feeling amongst the players.

“We’ve had a decent start to the league season but it’s upto us to push on and get a good run of results together.”
