World Cup 2014 newsEmilio Izaguirre is back on the road to Rio after Honduras beat Cuba 1-0 last night.

The win lifted Honduras onto seven points alongside Canada who lost 2-0 away to group leaders Panama.

Honduras travel to Panama on Friday October 12 with the hosts knowing that a win will take them through to the final qualifying stage for the World Cup.

With Canada hosting pointless Cuba the same night the final group match between Honduras and Canada could turn out to be a virtual play-off match.

In South America Venezuela enjoyed a crucial 2-0 win away to Paraguay although new Celtic striker Miku was an unused substitute.

The win puts Venezuela into sixth place in the South American group with the top four automatically qualifying and the fifth placed side involved in a play-off against a nation from another continent.

Venezuela’s next match is at home to Ecuador on October 16 with just three points separating the top six sides in the group at the halfway stage in the group.

Closer to home it was a night to forget for Adam Matthews as Wales crashed to a 6-1 defeat in Serbia.

Chris Coleman’s side were always chasing the game trailing 3-1 at half time when the Celtic full-back was replaced with Coleman describing the result and performance as embarrassing.

At Hampden the introduction of James Forrest wasn’t enough to inspire Scotland to victory with the home fans jeering the team and bungling boss Craig Levein at the final whistle after a 1-1 draw with Macedonia.
