Scott McDonald scoresTony Mowbray has finally been won over by Scott McDonald- over three years after first working with the striker.

McDonald’s status as Celtic’s first choice striker was quickly undermined by the arrival of Mowbray who sold the striker on to Middlesbrough while signing up Morten Rasmussen Diamansy Kamara and Robbie Keane.

With less than a year to run on his contract the Australian was frozen out of the ‘Boro side at the start of the season but after being given a top team recall has responded with four goals in five matches including the strike that knocked Sunderland out of the Capital One Cup.

“We have lots of competition, but Scott is probably a different type of goalscorer,” Mowbray admitted. “The goals he’s scored over the last week, I’m not sure that anyone else in our squad would score those type of goals.

“All three of his goals have been in and around the six-yard box because he knows where to run. He knows where the ball is going to drop and he’s sharp around the box. I think every team needs those type of goals.

“The team has shared the goals around really well, but I think Scott brings an ingredient to our team that you need. You have to be able to score the scruffy goals, and the goals where somebody is anticipating the defender missing it, and I think Scott brings that to the party.”

McDonald is in line for a great pay day at the end of his contract but is delighted to be back in first team action.

“The League Cup win was fantastic for the team and the fans,” McDonald said. “It’s great to be in the last eight and who knows what could happen with that?

“It’s exciting for the fans thinking about the quarter-final and beyond and I hope they enjoy that – but we have got a job to do.

“We have to put the cup on the back burner now and get back down to business and for us that means the league. The cup is nice but the reality is the league. That’s what this season is about.”

Skippy should not have been sold when he was. Mowbray was as big a disaster with us as the Barnes/Dalglish team.
