Craig Bellamy newsMalky Mackay is hoping that Craig Bellamy can steer Cardiff City into the promised land of the Premiership.

The two men were team-mates at Norwich City over a decade ago before the Welshman set off on a memorable career punctuated by expensive transfer to Newcastle, Blackburn, Liverpool, West Ham and a lively loan spell at Celtic.

Bellamy has been in a constant battle for fitness over the last few years but would love nothing better than to steer his home town club into the top flight.

Cardiff are five points clear at the top of the Championship with Mackay leaning on Bellamy to steer his younger team-mates through the promotion battlefield.

“Craig has had injuries twice this season and he is now getting into a rhythm,” his manager stated.

“I know he is a fantastic worker and you saw him in the last ten minutes on Wednesday (in the win over Crystal Palace) the way he closed down the full-back and was blocking balls 40 yards from goal.

“Certainly in the attacking side of things and being a threat going forward he is really starting to hit his stride which is obviously pleasing.

“Like any of our senior players the medical team manage them slightly differently at times.

“And there will be days when they are on the grass and days when they are of their feet doing something different. He is no different than guys like Heidar Helguson.”

Cardiff are at home to Millwall tomorow with another former Celt, Mick McCarthy, taking Ipswich to Wolves where he was sacked earlier this year.
