Referee chief moves to protect blundering Norris

|

referee Celtic newsThe refereeing fraternity are circling the wagons to protect Euan Norris and Raymond Whyte following their blundering performance in the Hibs v Hearts match on Sunday.

There was no doubting that Leigh Griffiths free-kick had crossed the line- by almost a yard- but rather than focus on the incompetence of officials referee chief John Fleming decided to talk about the costs of goal line technology.

Scottish football fans know that the game is skint and can’t afford sophisticated camera systems but two months after the SFA paid for a ‘training exercise’ to La Manga for over 30 referees fans are entitled to demand that Norris and Whyte are made to explain their decisions.

Rather than explain either the poor positioning or judgement of officials Fleming diverted the discussion towards the cost of new technology.

“The SFA are in favour of goal-line technology, but FIFA bosses said in Edinburgh last week the installation of each system will cost a six-figure sum on top of any maintenance costs,” Fleming said

“That would make it prohibitive for the SPL and SFL to consider rolling out any time soon.

“Of course, goal-line technology would help, and we have four companies who have obtained a licence but would Scottish clubs invest in this technology to the detriment of youth investment? I don’t think so in the current climate.”

Fleming added: “It does not matter whether it is five millimetres or five yards if it has crossed the line, it’s a goal.

“In that regard, I can sympathise with Hibernian and Pat Fenlon. There was another incident involving Hibs earlier this season where a header crossed the line, but the assistant did not have a good enough view to make that call.

“On that occasion, the assistant was close to the goal-line, but his view was obscured by a defending and attacking player.

“The main coaching for match officials is they must be 100 per cent sure of the decision they are going to give.”

If Norris and Whte weren’t 100% sure of whether Griffiths free kick had crossed the line or not they really shouldn’t be involved in any matches for a long time to come.

Referees are corrupt with a dash of complete incompetence thrown in,always have been. The thing that really gets to me is even when it is clear they have fucked up, they tighten up & back each other,Dallas,Dougal,MacDonald, syme & valentine the list is endless….all corrupt tho…

Ball went for a corner so play was stopped, I CANNOT believe that the 4th Official sitting in the stand did not have access to a monitor & could easily have informed the official about the goal.

Positioning of both Referee & Linesman were abysmal…specsavers will want a refund

goal line technology my arse, you only needed eyes to see that. Typical SFA….. I can see a strike coming………. seconds thoughts Celtic and NL weren’t involved =P

Why haven’t they went on strike again that clown kenny sheils gives them plenty of stick every week and nothing said about it. The refs are shocking as you say you only needed eyes to see it was in HH

Absolutely correct Hancock. You could even see by majority of the players’ reactions (on both sides) that they knew the ball was in. Scottish officials (including 4th officials) are either incompetent or corrupt. There is no decency in our game. You would think that getting it right would be paramount. However, all we get is clap-trap from the SFA and the press.

Euan Norris, the same man who has awarded Rangers 5 penalties in the 3 games he has been referee with them involved. Also the same referee who gave Hearts the penalty in last years Scottish Cup semi final against Celtic.

    Corrupt or incompetent? Or both?

  • Andy says:

Would’nt be surprised to see Norris ref either the cup semi or final that’s normally how it works.

We’ve been saying for many yrs that something shd be done. I’ve heard a few decent ones from other sports. Challenge system like tennis but that’s difficult as ball may not ne dead soon enough. I think the absurdity of it all was in the world cup when lampard. ‘scored’ and stadium screen replays showed the ball cross yet the ref wasn’t allowed to use what he could see. Stevie Wonder logic. We definitely need a solution but I fear we have a wider issue in the shape of career blazers. There are those who will circle wagons and naysay all day long rather than address the real problem. Sadly our beloved game has an institutional, entrenched practice of self-protection and cronyism. Let’s be realistic… the problem is nite going to be solved as we are asking the bodies to police themselves and as we’ve seen, it doesn’t happen. That very practice means we will be saddled with the sub-standard, blinkered vision we have endured for many years. I would love to see a group put in place to effect change within our game but who? How? Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
