Liam Henderson Celtic news

Celtic’s u-20 side turned on the style to crush Hearts 3-0 at Firhill today.

A double from Liam Henderson either side of a Patrik Twardzik strike ensured that there was no dropping off in standards after Wednesday’s SFA Youth Cup win at Hampden

Despite having the domestic double tied up there was no end of season feel about the match as a number of younger players staked their claim for next season’s side.

There were five changes to the side that beat Dunfermline on Wednesday night with John Herron, Bahrudin Atajic, Paul George and Callum McGregor promoted into the first team squad.

Paddy McNally replaced Eoghan O’Connell in central defence to team up with Stewart Findlay. In midfield Henderson, Paul McMullan and Patrik Twardzik joined Jackson Irvine and Jamie Lindsay while Denny Johnstone replaced Atajic as the sole striker.

The changes made little difference to the flow of the team with the hoops two goals in front after 15 minutes.

Within sixty seconds the Hearts keeper crashed a shot against his own defender on the edge of the penalty box with Henderson slotting the rebound into the empty net.

Twardzik doubled Celtic’s lead in the 15th minute when Irvine and Henderson combined to find the midfielder unguarded just inside the penalty box with his left foot shot rising high into the net.

Surprisingly there were no further goals before the break with Irvine and Lindsay coming closest to extending the lead.

The Hearts keeper made two good saves from Johnstone early in the second half before Celtic went 3-0 up in the 53rd minute. Johnstone intercepted a pass 30 yards from goal to send Henderson through with the midfielder easily slotting his shot beyond the keeper into the net.

Henderson was unable to complete his hat-trick but it was a more than satisfying performance at the end of a week which brought further silverware to Celtic Park.

CELTIC: Fasan, Fisher (McManus 59), McNally, Findlay, Miller: McMullan, Henderson, Irvine, Lindsay (Waters 67) P Twardzik (Kirwan 63) : Johnstone,

SUBS: Hart, O’Connell

Celtic have always a great teams over the years. To win the double is a sign for the future, and we all remember the “quality streets kids” under Jock Stein.
