The 5.15 debate

Celtic fans newsThe announcement that Celtic will start the new season with a 5.15pm kick-off at home to Ross County seems to have divided opinion among supporters.

After years of complaints about lunchtime kick-off’s news of the flag day fixture starting at 5.15pm hasn’t been universally welcomed.

Almost all fans would prefer 3pm Saturday kick-off’s but with that slot not possible for live broadcasting I think that a 5.15pm start is much better than a ‘late breakfast’ kick-off between noon and 1pm.

Although 5.15pm isn’t ideal it seems much more supporter friendly that lunchtime slots in outposts like Inverness, Dingwall and Aberdeen.

That option will be back again in the third week of the season when the Celtic support is required to get to Pittordrie for a 12.30 kick-off.

While the views of supporters is crucial the impact on players is equally important with early kick-off’s noted for their slow starts.

Getting players awake, fed and prepared for a 12.30 kick off is a much tougher task that for a 5.15pm start which allows for more natural breakfast and lunch times before getting into game mode.

Leaving hotels shortly after breakfast time is certainly a challenge with 12 noon kick-off’s requiring players to be delivered to the stadium shortly after 10am.

One argument that I heard recently was that it ought to suit the players who do the majority of their training in the morning. It’s hard to argue with that viewpoint but there is a big distinction between playing and training with players themselves unhappy with earlier kick-off’s.

With television calling the shots supporters will only ever be an after thought, if given the choice I’d imagine the majority of fans would prefer a 5.15 kick off ahead of the 12.30 starts that we’ve had to get used to in the television era.

I’d prefer 12:30 on a Saturday but would rather have 17:15 on a Saturday than anytime on a Sunday.

Agree hate Sunday game the atmosphere is crap and am always ruff after the Saturday night HH

It’s time for Friday evening kick offs in my opinion. Not for flag day though and it’s far easier getting somewhere for the evening kick off than it is for the early kick offs. 3pm will always be the preferred kick off time for everyone but if we want money to sustain the other clubs then it is the sacrifice the clubs make because ultimately it harms them with attendances in the long run.

It’s doesn’t matter after last night were all doomed sack the board the manager the team the supporters sell the stadium and chuck it am finished will it ……….. That’s only some of the comments from CQN on last night. Some people need to get a grip. On the 5-15 kick off it doesn’t suit everybody, bring back the old 3 o’clock on a Saturday just for a change it worked for over 100 years it couldn’t have been that bad HH

There’s a lot of it about mark.
On this very site you can make unsubstanciated claims about our managers decision making and integrity, the abilities of his coaching staff, the effectiveness of our scouting set up, 12.5 for a 90 grand player means nothing apparantly (a new Scottish record btw) and the honesty and integrity of Peter Lawwell, th chairman and the board, an if that opinion is questioned, then you’re not an ‘honest Celtic supporter’ and/or have in some way been brain washed by ….I don’t know…The Celtic View? into never complaining about anything and being some kind of sap for it.
Nowdays it seems you’re in some way a more enlightened anda much better and ‘honest’ supporter if you complain about verything and question the integrity of every aspect of the club and every person envolved with it.

While of course the huns and the laptop loyalists lap it up like gravy.

That’s the way it seems mate, having a go at everything Celtic 100 quid of the season ticket- people still moaned. Getting over 12m for a player who cost less than 1m – showing lack of ambition. Lennon gets pelters for trying things in preseason- we won the double and got last 16 CL after a nightmare preseason. It’s time to wake up and enjoy what we have, to the moaners if you don’t like it don’t go don’t pay your money and SHUT IT go shopping with the mrs on a Saturday/Sunday and let the FAITHFUL support the team. HH

        • Sweeney Hughes says:

Faithful through and through mate, you’ve got to take the crushing downers along with the euphoric highs.
Big Jock had bad results, contrary to the myth some folk seem to believe that The Lions romped every game 4-0 home and away. As Paul67 pointed out some time ago, there were some Celtic supporters of the opinion that he should havve been moved on in 1966

MO’N had his disasters both on the park and in the transfer market.

For better or worse the Celtic first team will always get my full support, of course with the odd gripe about a result of an individual performance, on the pitch, in the dug-out or in the boardroom.
If you want to be ‘entertained’ take your wife to the pictures…..or better still to a Circus.

I believe there’s one in operation over Govan way, lol!

Ps. I’m not calling Celtic supporters huns or telling them to support sevco…its a joke!

          HH

5:15 on a Saturday is poor. Why can’t we have 2:00 – 4:00 Sunday afternoon slots for TV. As for mid-day in the highlands even the the highland fans don’t go to these games. Rethink required big style.

  • Stevie says:

Disgrace personally and selfishly I’d tell Sky to GTF we the supporters invest much more money than SKY.
If we were customers and not fans this shit wouldn’t happen.were else would you by a ticket then the time of the event changes with no recompense.
I know of many ex season ticket holders who’ve given up their tickets due to kick off times.
What Celtics priority season ticket holders or SKY subscribers.
