Tony Watt LierseTony Watt was given a ridiculous red card yesterday within minutes of coming on as a substitute for Lierse against Charleroi.

The 19-year-old has been absent in recent weeks due to sickness and came off the bench in the 62nd minute to replace Tom Wils with the scores level at 1-1.

Without having touched the ball Watt was red carded after Charleroi’s Brazilian defender Ederson played fell to the ground Kyle Lafferty style on the half way line as the two players chased a through ball.

Referee Chris Virant was close to the scene but bought the blatant gamesmanship by the Charleroi with Watt looking horrified as he left the pitch without touching the ball.

Despite being down to ten men Ahmed Farag scored in the 72nd minute to give the home side full points and provide Watt with some consolation as his side moved upto 11th place with 14 points from 14 matches.

The Lierse website described the sending off as: “What happened next was too improbable for words. Watt took the ball from Ederson. The Brazilian was suddenly lying. Virant Tony Watt showed the red card. Lierse had so unjustly with ten further. “

Lierse will appeal against the red card in order to have Watt available for next Saturday’s trip to face OH Leuven.

In England Callum McGregor was unable to prevent Notts County from losing 3-0 away to Steven Pressley’s Coventry. County are sitting at the bottom od League One but are only 13 points off a play-off spot with little to separate the sides in the third tier of English football.

In Inverness Jackson Irvine was unable to help Kilmarnock to their third win on the bounce as they lost 2-1 to second placed ICT.

The Brazillian “Lafferty” should be banned for 10 games. He represents so much of what’s wrong with the game these days.

  • KevLat says:

Playing in the SPL surely he’s going to have to get used to get sent off for no reason anyway

It was only a yellow card for Tony Watt, there is cheating going on and faking injury. Lierse are right to appeal against this wrong decision.

This type of despicable behaviour seems to be on the increase in todays game. Sometimes though, as I seen at CP yesterday, it enables refs to make the decisions they want, which in turn encourages players to behave in this despicable manner.

Throw in refs giving advantage when there obviously is none and not giving it when there is, is enough to change the out come of a game. Linesmen who ignore blatant hand balls when they’re staring directly at it from about four yards doesn’t make it any easier either.

Ps. Refs and linesmen making it easier for Celtic!? Sorry I don’t know what I was thinking about their. As fkn if!
