Has Leigh Griffiths now gone too far?

Leigh Griffiths earOn his charge sheet it’s barely worth a mention but what was Leigh Griffiths thinking of when he raced behind the goal at Motherwell cupping his ear to the travelling support?

To describe the striker as troubled would be an understatement with the 23-year-old racking up more controversy than most players manage in a career.

Singing that ‘Hearts are going burst’ is certainly fair game but the Rudi Skacel song belongs in another category entirely.

Fortunately for Griffiths he has a manager that knows a thing or two about disciplinary matters and off the field indiscretions with Neil Lennon going public on Friday to back the player despite investigations going on into his actions by the SFA, Police Scotland and Celtic.

With that in mind the muted reaction he got coming on at Fir Park should have come as a relief for the former Hibs striker with many supporters having a zero tolerance approach to racism with others prepared to give Griffiths the benefit of the doubt based on Lennon’s own comments.

When he did replace Beram Kayal in the 66th minute there were some fans that booed his appearance, they were in a minority with the bulk of the support showing that they are prepared to forgive if not forget.

Whatever thought process then prompted Griffiths to cup his hand to his ear after scoring must be the source of real concern for Lennon and Celtic.

In a low key end of season game Griffiths seems almost able to start a fight in an empty room by challenging the supporters unhappy at his presence.

The question that the Celtic hierarchy are now likely to be asking is how will the striker react when under real pressure?

Many Celtic players have been booed by their own ‘supporters’ a word with Frank McAvennie or Mo Johnstone would let Griffiths know that yesterday’s reaction was relatively mild

What happens next is the $64m question, or the £800,000 question, with the urge to cut his losses likely to appeal to Lennon more than the obvious ability of the striker he signed from Wolves three months ago.
