Joe Thomson newsCeltic’s u-17 side drew 1-1 with Corinthians today to finish third behind Liverpool and Ajax in Pool A  of the Aegon Future’s Cup.

The young hoops needed to win against the Brazilians and await the outcome of the Ajax-Liverpool game but found it tough going falling behind to a first half penalty.

Joe Thomson equalised midway through the second period but Tommy McIntyre’s side were unable to force a winner while Liverpool overcame Ajax 2-0 to top the group.

Corinthians had lost 4-0 to Ajax and Liverpool on Saturday and were determined not to go home with a hat-trick of defeats and took the lead from a dubious penalty awarded for handball against Jamie McCart.

Led by captain Thomson Celtic penned Corinthians back into their own half for large periods of the second half with the skipper stabbing the ball home with 15 minutes left to play.

Despite dominating the match Celtic were unable to find a winning goal meaning that they’ll play Benfica tomorrow in the 5th/6th place play-off.

In the semi-finals Ajax will meet Anderlecht with Liverpool taking on AC Milan.

In Pool B Benfica drew with AC Milan, lost to Anderlecht and beat Fenerbache.

On their return from Amstersdam Celtic’s u-17 side will be preparing for next Monday’s Glasgow Cup Final against Sevco which will be staged at Celtic Park.

Both teams recorded a home win over each other in the group phase but it took a 3-0 win away to Queens Park in the final group match to decide both finalists.
