Joe Thomson newsA stunning goal from Joe Thomson gave Celtic’s u-17 side a well deserved win over Liverpool at the Aegon Future’s Cup in Amsterdam today.

The win sets Celtic up nicely for tomorrow’s match against Corinthians with a win likely to give the young hoops a place in the semi-finals of the competition.

Celtic had lost out in their opening match to Ajax courtesy of an own goal from Jamie McCart but that didn’t deter them as they faced Liverpool.

In contrast Liverpool had beaten Corinthians 4-0 in their opening match but were rarely given a look in as Celtic dominated throughout.

The game looked likely to finish goal-less but with six minutes left to play (in the hour long match) Thomson timed his run behind the Liverpool defence  perfectly before smashing a great shot across goal into the net.

Thomson was also on target in midweek when Celtic’s u-20 side lost 2-1 away to Hearts and was also a scorer against Ajax in the u-19 Champions League earlier in the season.

Celtic face Corinthians tomorrow with an 11am kick-off with the game taking place at the same time as Liverpool take on Ajax.

The Brazilian side appear to be out of their depth in the competition having lost both games by 4-0.

Celtic have been drawn in Pool A with Anderlecht, Benfica, Fenerbache and AC Milan in the other group. The semi-finals will be played tomorrow afternoon with the final places in the competition decided on Monday.
