Tommy McIntyre Celtic newsCeltic finished the Aegon Future’s Cup in fifth place after beating Benfica on penalties with the tournament won by Ajax.

The hosts beat Liverpool 2-1 in the final after the two clubs- who were in Celtic’s group- emerged victorious from their semi-final clashes.

In the group stage Celtic lost 1-0 to Liverpool courtesy of an own goal and deservedly beat Liverpool 1-0 with Joe Thomson scoring the only goal of the match. Liverpool beat Ajax 2-0 in the group but were unable to repeat that in the final.

Steven Boyd scored with a great solo goal after Benfica had taken the lead with the four matches indicating that the young hoops are very much at home playing against their peers. Playing against Ajax, Liverpool, Corinthians and Benfica in 60 minute matches Tommy McIntyre’s side twice drew 1-1 with a 1-0 win and 1-0 defeat for good measure.

Captain Joe Thomson scored two of the three goals scored with the midfielder going from strength to strength having made an impact in the u-20 side and playing a major role in the u-19 Champions League campaign against AC Milan, Barcelona and Ajax.

A year ago Thomson was playing in centre midfield for the u-17 side alongside Liam Henderson and will be hoping that the next 12 months can follow in the footsteps of his team-mate.

Of more immediate concern to Thomson and his team-mate’s is next Monday’s Glasgow Cup Final when Sevco visit Celtic Park defending the trophy that they won last season at Firhill.

In the group stages Celtic and Sevco won their home matches against each other with Celtic beating Queens Park 3-0 in their final group match to book their final place.

As well as hosting the Aegon Future’s Cup Ajax were in action in the final of the Dutch Cup, losing 5-1 to PEC Zwolle with the match starting with a spectacular pyro display from the Ajax fans which delayed the game.
