Glasgow Cup Final 2014Celtic’s u-17 side completed their season with a 1-0 win over AZ Alkmaar at the Toernooi Varsseveld today.

Aidan Nesbitt scored the only goal of the game as the young hoops finished in fifth place of the competition after completing their group behind PSV Eindhoven and the Japanese national side.

Celtic had opened the tournament on Friday losing 1-0 to Japan then lost 2-1 to PSV Eindhoven with Calvin Miller scoring for the hoops. In the final group match Regan Hendry scored the only goal of the game as Celtic beat a Vasseveld Select 1-0.

PSV won the competition beating Vitesse Arnhem 3-0 in the final with Japan claiming third place with a 2-0 win over Anderlecht.

Elsewhere Liam Henderson, Jamie Lindsay and Denny Johnstone were in the Scotland u-19 side that drew 0-0 with Ukraine in the European Championships.

Swansea’s Adam King missed a penalty with eight minutes left to play with Ricky Sbragia’s side facing hosts England tomorrow, in their opening match England beat Montenegro 6-0.

Speaking before the Ukraine match Henderson said: “We 100 per cent feel we’re capable of qualifying from this group, absolutely.  We’re a confident team. We all believe in our own ability and I don’t see why we shouldn’t.

“We’ve got a great team spirit. We all have a laugh together and we know each other’s game inside-out. We play for different clubs but we feel like a team.

“I don’t think the confidence is to do with your mind-set. We’re going into games with confidence because Ricky (Sbragia) and John (Collins) will have us well prepared with a game-plan. It comes naturally.”

Looking at his own progress the midfielder added: “It’s been a brilliant season. It’s been a great experience for me and I’m just hoping to build on it for next season.

“Last summer, I was moving from Barrowfield to Lennoxtown, hoping to be involved in the Development squad and the Under-20s, but then I got the call to go away with the team for pre-season. It’s just carried on from there.

“It’s every boy’s ambition to play for the first team, so I just got my head down and worked hard to see where it would take me.”
