Paul McGowan is the latest former Celt to have signed for Dundee.

The midfielder was surprisingly freed by St Mirren at the end of last season and has signed a two year deal at Dens Park. McGowan’s former Celtic youth side team-mate Simon Ferry joined Dundee two weeks ago.

After winning promotion on the final day of last season Paul Hartley has been given time to put together a squad to stay in the top flight- something that Barry Smith was denied two years ago when the Dens Parkers came up at the last minute as Club 12.

Last season’s promotion winning side included former Celt’s Gary Irvine, Declan Gallagher, Ryan Conroy, Kevin McBride and Nicky Riley.

After agreeing the move to Dundee, McGowan told the club website: “I was shocked to be released by St. Mirren. My mobile kept ringing from the next day but I didn’t answer as I didn’t know the number.”

“It turned out to be Paul (Hartley) and I met him and Scot Gardiner on the West Coast and they sold me on the club and team, I was convinced from then and it was just a matter of getting the deal done.

“I know Simon (Ferry) from Celtic, (Kevin) Thomson has played at the highest level and (James) McPake is a leader, it shows the ambition of the club and was major factor as well.”

Dundee are also interested in signing Lewis Toshney who was on loan at Dens Park two seasons ago. The defender missed the whole of last season through injury and is now out of contract.

Toshney’s fitness would be an issue in any deal while Celtic are entitled to a development fee as he is under 22 years of age.
