Spineless Ally McCoist has backed away from asking Sevco fans to buy season tickets.

With reports that season ticket sales lurk around the 10,000 mark it seems unlikely that McCoist will be given the £30m transfer warchest promised by Charles Green with concerns expressed about whether the club can start next season without going into administration.

A combination of dire football and suspicions about the motives of the club owners has contributed to season ticket sales crashing and accelerating the problems of the club.

McCoist, known as sleekit in the dressing room and boardroom, has previously been gushing in his support for the club hierarchy whether it was Craig Whyte, Charles Green, Craig Mather or current fall guy Graham Wallace, who used to work for Manchester City.

In a trademark interview in which he expresses every thought that comes into his head, often completely contradictory, McCoist managed to get through the cliche handbook without asking fans to renew season tickets.

‘Incredible numbers’, ‘unbelievable support’, ‘pay tribute’, ‘thank them’, ‘absolutely fantastic’ and ‘best supporters in the world’ were just some of the phrases used by the £800,000-a-year former Question of Sport favourite as he spoke to the club website.

“I make no apology for stating they are the best supporters in the world,” he said. “They really are, and we feel we can absolutely rely without any doubt on their continued support for next season and following seasons.

“Their backing means so much. Out there at Ibrox it goes without saying the support the fans give the team is absolutely wonderful. But also away from home they have travelled the length and breadth of the country to follow the Rangers.

“It has been amazing how they have just turned up and taken over villages and towns all over the country. It has been magical, it really has. A lot of the journeys will be a little bit more central for our supporters but I fully expect Dumbarton, Kirkaldy and Dumfries to be taken again next over next.

“They will be out there at Ibrox in massive, massive numbers supporting us at home.”

It seems likely that the rookie manager may be in for a bit of a disappointment when Ibrox hosts the opening game of next season- assuming that the club is still in business in August.
