MouyokoloSteve Mouyokolo is on trial at Portuguese side Gil Vicente.

The defender left Celtic at the end of last season following a 10 month deal that was ruined by injury.

Neil Lennon had hoped that the former Wolves and Hull defender would provide extra options in defence but Mouyokolo’s Celtic career barely got off the ground after he ruptured his achilles just a month after signing.

Mouyokolo played in a 2-1 defeat by Rio Grande as Gil Vicente prepared for the new season, reports in the Portuguese media describe the defender as a 21-year-old which sounds rather creative.

Last season Gil Vicente finished seventh in the league.

After signing for Celtic a year ago he said: “I know that, with all the injuries I had, I probably lost confidence because when you don’t play that much and get injured, you lose your confidence,” he said after signing his contract.

“I’m really, really pleased that I had the chance to come here and show that I was finally fit and fine.

“I played with Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink (at Hull). We spent a lot of time together and he talked to me about Celtic a lot. He really enjoyed it here.

“I had Bobo Balde on the phone when we were in Germany (for pre-season). We had a long chat and he was just telling me that he loved it here as well. It’s a big step forward for me, it is. I’m really grateful to sign for Celtic, which is a big move for me.”

After his injury Mouyokolo made just one appearance for Celtic, as a late substitute in the 2-0 win away to Dundee United in April.

This afternoon a Celtic XI take on East Kilbride FC at K Park (Calderglen Country Park), kick off 3pm.
