Ritchie TowellWith pre-season training well underway there is plenty of activity among the army of former Celts scattered throughout the game.

Pride of place clearly goes to Richie Towell who scored twice for Dundalk in their impressive Europa League win away to Jeunesse Esch of Luxemburg.

It was just the eighth time that Dundalk had won a European match with the prize for completing the job at Oriel Park a tie in the second round with Hadjuk Split.

Towell is in his second season with Dundalk and is likely to be on the move to England at the end of the season with Dundalk a point ahead of Cork City at the top of the table.

After helping Celtic to the 2010 league and cup double at u-19 level Towell spent a season and a half on loan at Hibs but after flourishing under Colin Calderwood his progress came to a halt under Pat Fenlon.

Another nearly man in the headlines is Jim O’Brien who has left Barnsley for Coventry City after three seasons with the Yorkshire side.

O’Brien made one competitive appearance for Celtic, at Fir Park as a substitute right-back against Gretna in 2007, but made more on an impact during spells with Dundee United, Dunfermline and Motherwell.

Coventry boss Steven Pressley played alongside O’Brien in the Celtic reserve side and was delighted to sign up the midfielder for the homeless League One side.

“We’re delighted to bring a player of Jim’s quality to t he football club,” Pressley said.

“He is a player of proven Championship quality and his energy, work rate and team ethic along with that quality makes him a perfect fit for us.

“Coming into the summer, I knew we needed to add some quality to our midfield and options on the wing. Jim ticks all the boxes.

“After speaking with him, it was evident to me that Jim has the right mentality to fit into our system and I believe that this football club can provide him with the challenge he wants.”

Up a division in the Championship Daryl Murphy signed his umpteenth contract for Ipswich following a season in which he played his way into Martin O’Neill’s international squad.

Murphy went on loan three times to Ipswich while at Sunderland and Celtic with Mick McCarthy happy to agree a two year extension.

“I’m really enjoying my football here so I’m obviously delighted to have signed a new contract,” the striker told the Ipswich website.

“I’ve said before, Ipswich Town feels like home for me – both on and off the pitch. My family love the area and that’s very important to me.

“We are making progress as a football club and the challenge now is to continue that next season and hopefully get into that top six. That’s the target.”

Elsewhere Declan Gallagher, also a member of the 2010 youth side, has left Dundee to join Livingston while Peter Grant, son of the former Celtic midfielder, has joined Falkirk.
