MulgrewRonny Deila has announced that Charlie Mulgrew will take over from Scott Brown as club captain.

Brown faces upto three months on the sidelines after damaging his hamstring in the first minute of the recent friendly against Rapid Vienna.

With Georgios Samaras no longer at the club the decision came down to a straight choice between Mulgrew and Kris Commons with the former Aberdeen defender getting the nod.

“Charlie will be the captain, he is a natural leader,” Deila said at tonight’s pre-match media conference in Iceland ahead of the Champions League qualifier against KR Reykjavik.

Giving Mulgrew the captaincy almost certainly means that he will also start in central midfield alongside Stefan Johansen.

Mulgrew could be played in central defence alongside Virgil van Dijk but the return of Efe Ambrose after World Cup duty means that the back four will be on similar lines to last season. Ambrose missed out on the four match trip to Austria but Deila has no concerns about his readiness for tomorrow’s match.

“I’m more confident with him than some of the players who have been on vacation,” the hoops boss added. “He has been playing matches in the World Cup and has played well. He’s fit and I have no problem in playing him.”

As well as Brown Tony Watt was also missing from the squad that arrived in the sunshine of Iceland.

The striker only played for 12 minutes during the trip to Austria and will get his first 90 minutes of the season tomorrow night in a friendly at Lennoxtown against Stenhousemuir.
