Don CowieDon Cowie has turned down the chance to join Sevco in favour of Wigan Athletic.

The midfielder signed a two year deal with the Championship side despite the offer of a move to Ibrox where he could have joined up with Ian Black and Nicky Law.

After watching his side draw 1-1 with Brora Rangers on Sunday McCoist revealed: “ Don is certainly a player we have been interested in. It is our job to continue to look out for the best players possible that we can bring to the club and Cowie would certainly come into that category.”

The ‘move’ for Cowie never got as far as a guided tour of the state-of-the-art facilities at Murray Park with the former Cardiff midfielder flying to Germany for talks with Wigan boss Uwe Rossler.

After joining Wigan Cowie admitted: “It’s great to have signed, as soon as I heard of the interest from Wigan Athletic I was keen to discuss coming here.

“The club has achieved a lot in such a short space of time and after leaving Cardiff, I knew this was the place I wanted to be.

“The manager’s influence on me signing was big, I met him out in Germany and I knew quite quickly that he was the right man for me to work with.  His vision of how to play football is exciting and it suits me perfectly as a player.

“I’m a midfielder who loves to be on the ball, I like to get forward and score goals, but I’m also willing to put a shift in for the team.”

Cowie will find a lot of Scottish voices in the Wigan dressing room with one team-mate particularly keen to bring the midfield veteran to Lancashire.

“As soon as James McArthur found out I might be signing he was on the phone nearly every day to me,” Cowie said. “He spoke really highly of the club.

“You know what Jamesy is like he’s a great character, a hyperactive guy and it’s people like him who are great to work with on a daily basis in football.

“I know quite a few of the Scottish boys as and I know Leon Barnett and Andrew Taylor from my time at Cardiff, so it’s great to come into a squad with some familiar faces.”

Despite being turned down by Cowie McCoist is hoping to convince Graham Wallace, who used to work for Manchester City, to offer Marius Zaluika a contract.
