Tony Watt Standard LiegeTony Watt made an instant impact on his Standard Liege debut- winning an 88th minute penalty to help his new side to a 3-2 win away to Kortrijk.

The former Celtic striker was left out of the squad for the Champions League draw with Panathinaikos in midweek but looks certain to feature in the return leg in Greece.

Watt made scoring debuts for Celtic and Lierse- both times as a substitute- and was brought on by Guy Luzon in the 67th minute with Standard leading 2-1.

Kortrijk equalised almost straight away through Gertjan de Mets with the game swinging from end to end.

Watt forced a good save out of goalkeeper Darren Keet in the 80th minute but with two minutes left to play he was brought down in the penalty box as he prepared to shoot at goal.

Geoffrey Mujangi Bia stepped up to roll the ball into the net to give the visitors full points and keep them level with Anderlecht with six points from two matches.

It was Watt’s first competitive match in five months with Luzon looking to gradually phase his new signing into the side.

After a hectic week the 20-year-old is looking forward to proving his worth at Standard without a constant whispering campaign questioning his professionalism.

“After the close season my conditioning needs some tweaking,” Watt admitted. “During the last four months I have only played in two friendly matches so you can’t expect me to be match sharp, I want to be ready to start in two or three weeks.

“The first time that I spoke to the coach I knew that I wanted to work here. He has a lot of passion, he supports me and that gives me confidence, I want to work and train with him.”

After their midweek trip to Greece Standard are at home to Gent in the league next Saturday.
