Virgil van DijkVirgil van Dijk has been left out of the Celtic team to play Dundee this afternoon.

With the transfer window closing tomorrow night at 11pm it seems that the Dutchman has played his last game in a Celtic shirt.

Newcastle and Sunderland have been strongly linked with the defender while Seville have also been quoted with an interest in the former Groningen man.

UPDATE: Speaking to Radio Scotland Ronny Deila said that van Dijk was staying and had been left out due to his partner expecting a child.

Speculation about van Dijk has been rife since Celtic’s Champions League defeat from Maribor on Tuesday night.

Straight after the match he told a Dutch TV station: “It is difficult to say if this defeat will have an influence on my future. I want to play at the highest level.

“We were playing for a place in the Champions League and we did not deserve to go through. You have to be honest. I am a Celtic player for now but we will have to see what happens.

“The Champions League is the highest level and now we have gone into the Europa League. We shall see. Now I’m a Celtic player but the transfer window is open until Monday night.”

A number of Premiership clubs are believed to be interested in van Dijk with Southampton and Swansea watching his situation as closely as the north east clubs.

With Van Dijk missing Efe Ambrose returns to central defence to partner Jason Denayer with Adam Matthews starting at right-back. Mikael Lustig is also missing with Kris Commons replacing Charlie Mulgrew.

Looking forward to the match Ronny Deila said: “I want to see much of the same I saw against Dundee United and try to progress from that.

“I think that was a good performance and it will be an important match for us to get a good performance and result against Dundee.

“We really want to win that game and again we are looking forward to bouncing back from the game against Inverness.

“We have had some days since the Maribor game so we are prepared and we will have our energy back for the game on Sunday.”
