Europa LeagueAstra dropped to sixth place in the Romanian league after a goal-less home draw against Petrolul Ploiesti.

Twelve games into the campaign Astra are trailing seven points behind leaders Steaua Bucharest with Petrolul now in third place behind Steaua and Cluj.

New Astra boss Oleg Protasov has still to celebrate a win after three matches in charge but feels that his side are moving in the right direction.

After the stalemate he said: “It was an exciting match tonight. We gave everything I had and I wanted to win this game. Even though it came after a tough European match against Celtic I felt that we played well but we also played well at Celtic and lost.

“We looked fresh and a draw wasn’t a bad result. As a coach I know that we have to improve and start getting results. I’m confident that we’ll do that and start winning.”

Celtic face the Romanian’s next Thursday with Astra warming up for that match with a home league match on Saturday against Ceahlaul Piatr Neamt who are third bottom of the league.

Elsewhere in Europa League Group D Red Bull Salzburg came back from their 4-2 win over Dinamo Zagreb to draw 2-2 away to Grodig. The result means that Salzburg remain at the top of the table of goal difference from Wolfberger AC.

In Croatia Dinamo Zagreb warmed up for their must-win clash with Salzburg by beating Osijek 5-0 at home to stretch their lead at the top of the table to six points over Rakeka.
