Neil LennonNeil Lennon got off to a winning start as manager of Bolton with a 1-0 win away to Birmingham City.

The only goal of the game came in the 20th minute when Matt Mills headed home from a Jay Spearing corner.

It could have been a bigger win for the visitors but Craig Davies sent an 83rd minute penalty over the bar after home keeper Darren Randolph was sent off.

Before the penalty was taken Lennon was sent to the stand after an exchange with the fourth official.

With just their second win of the season Bolton moved off bottom place in the table ahead of Blackpool who lost away at Huddersfield.

Over 2,000 Bolton fans made the journey to the midlands to back their new manager and were rewarded with full points in their bid to get away from the relegation zone.

Next up for Lennon is a trip to Charlton on Tuesday night before his home debut against Brentford a week today.

Although they are currently sitting second bottom with eight points Bolton are just twelve points away from a play-off spot.

The Championship is one of the most competitive leagues in the game with as less than 20 points often separating relegated teams from the play off.

With a winning start to build on Lennon will be hoping to steer Bolton into the top half of the division where Watford are the early pace setters with 24 points from 12 matches.

Norwich are the best placed of the sides relegated from the Premiership with both Cardiff and Fulham sacking their manager in the early weeks of the season as they languish in the bottom half of the table.
