Virgil van DijkVirgil van Dijk has spoken out about the benefits of his international call up for Holland.

Watching a 2-0 defeat to Iceland from the bench wasn’t much fun for the defender but training sessions against some of the top strikers in the game provided ample compensation.

Van Dijk appears to be one of the most in-demand defenders in the game with is international call up raising his value even higher.

“It was good to go away on international duty,” he admitted despite Holland’s indifferent performances. “It is a great experience as you learn a lot. Hopefully I will get my chance for Holland soon but that is up to the coach.

“I just need to keep playing well for Celtic and we will see what happens. I come up against the likes of van Persie and Robben in training, they are experienced players and good guys too. You learn so much from them and I have a lot of respect for both guys.

“Everyone has a high standard as we are the best 25 players in Holland. We have a lot of quality. De Vrij and Martins Indi started both games against Kazakhstan and Iceland.”

Looking ahead he added: “I don’t know what will happen as I just want to do well with Celtic and wait for my opportunity. I don’t know who keeps an eye on me from the Dutch FA but somebody will be watching my progress.

“I just want to keep my place in the squad and you never know what will happen the next time the squad is announced.

“The head coach (Guus Hiddink) didn’t say much to me when I was with the Holland squad other than to focus on the game. He knows what I am capable of and that’s why he chose me.”
