A wonder strike from Eric Lamela has set the world talking after the Spurs star scored with a rabona goal in Spurs’ 5-1 rout of Greek side Asteras Tripolis.

Pulling his left leg behind his standing right Lamella smashed home a shot from 20 yards out that instantly became the talk of social media.

Many fans at White Hart Lane weren’t able to appreciate the quality of the goal but online comparisons were quickly being made with Diego Maradona, Gianfranco Zola and Roberto Baggio who had scored with similar strikes.

Former Spurs striker Gary Lineker was one of the first to comment on the goal claiming on his twitter account: “I’ve just seen Lamela’s goal for Spurs tonight. Oh I say!!! If there’s a better goal scored this season than @Coco_Lamela’s then I can’t wait to see it…”

After the final whistle Lamela’s team-mates were equally praiseworthy of the effort, defender Jan Vertonghen said: “I was stunned, for two minutes I was just thinking about that goal. It is 100% the best goal I’ve seen live. I’ve seen a lot of YouTube clips but I’ve never seen a goal like it.”

Harry Kane. whose hat-trick is likely to be forgotten, added: “It was crazy. He’s got that in his locker and it was great for him to do it on the big stage.”

There is no record of a Celtic player scoring with a similar type of goal but Morten Wieghorst did come up with an incredible assist in a 6-0 win over Aberdeen under John Barnes.

With the ball out wide he put his rioght foot behind his left to cross the ball for Regi Blinker who shot past Jim Leighton in a rare but memorable win under Barnes.
