Roy Keane 1Roy Keane has surprisingly resigned as assistant manager of Aston Villa.

The move was announced this morning and will take effect immediately leaving Paul Lambert to face Leicester City tomorrow without his number two.

Keane has rarely been out of the headlines this season with his latest autobiography creating a storm of headlines- principally about his time and departure from Manchester United.

Before accepting the job at Villa he was in talks with Celtic about taking over from Neil Lennon but opted out of discussions to concentrate on his role assisting Martin O’Neill with the Ireland international side.

“Ultimately, my roles with Villa and Ireland, and combining my commitment to these, has become too much,” Keane stated. “It isn’t fair to either Villa or Ireland, so I’ve made this decision. I’d like to thank Paul for giving me a great opportunity to come to a brilliant football club.

“I’ve really enjoyed my experiences at Villa and I wish the management team, the players, the supporters and the club nothing but the best going forward.”

Responding to the news Lambert said:”Roy came to me this morning and he informed me that, ultimately, the difficulty of combining both roles has prompted his decision, which I respect totally.

“In the brief period we have worked together he has been great in the role and I understand his reasons for leaving.”

Adding mystery to the decision Ireland have only two more fixtures during the remainder of the domestic season.
