Malky MackayMalky Mackay is back in football as manager of Wigan Athletic.

The former Celtic defender was sacked by Cardiff City last December and seemed poised to take over at Crystal Palace until a series of text messages were released that scuppered that move.

Two seasons ago Mackay managed Cardiff to winning the Championship with the Lancashire side opting for that experience despite a number of protest groups voicing their opposition to the move.

Wigan host Middlesbrough on Saturday with Mackay’s immediate task being to get them out of the relegation zone.

“I’m very proud, very proud that the Chairman has given me the chance to come in here as manager and I’m going to make sure that I repay that,” the new Latics boss said.

“It’s a club that I know very well having played and managed in England for 11 years and coming up here to watch the games over those years.

“The recent history of Wigan Athletic is quite something.  I was actually at the FA Cup final, I took my son to his first ever FA Cup final, so it was quite an occasion to go to.  It’s moments like those that make me very proud to become manager of this club.”

Discussing recent events Malky added: “It has been a difficult period in my career and I have made mistakes, but I hope that in my time at Wigan the people of Wigan will see who I am, and see that I’m someone who desperately wants the club to do well.

“I’ve got great respect for Dave Whelan.  It was from a far to start with, but when I met him I spoke to him and told him about the interview I saw with him on television the day Uwe Rosler was let go.

“I thought he spoke magnificently well that day and it was inspiring to see somebody speaking so passionately about the club.

“For him to give me this opportunity I’ll make sure I do everything in my power in terms of my work ethic and my drive and determination to make sure that the Chairman and his club are back where they should be.”

Mackay will inherit four former Celts in the Wigan squad in Gary Caldwell, Shaun Maloney, Thomas Rogne and Marco Fortune.
