Virgil van DijkRuud Gullit has called on Guus Hiddink to give Virgil van Dijk his international chance.

Back-to-back defeats from Iceland and Mexico has stunned the Dutch after they reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in Brazil.

Hiddink’s team have a battle on their hands to secure an automatic place at Euro 2016 with Iceland and the Czech Republic on full points from three matches while the Dutch lag behind on three points.

Van Dijk was on the bench in the 2-0 defeat from Iceland but was left in the stand in midweek watching the defeat from Mexico.

“We need defenders off their man and then handing the ball to a teammate have,” Gullit said after the defeat from Mexico. “You used to have defenders as Stam and Brandts. They could play the ball out but they also knew how to defend, their defensive duties were paramount.

“Why does Hiddink not give defenders like Douglas (of Dynamo Moscow), Donk (Ryan of Kasimpas of Turkey) or Van Dijk a serious chance?”

Gullit’s call for the Celtic defender has been backed up by fans voting in a poll on the Soccer News Dutch football website.

Over 4,000 fans voted in the poll asking which of the three defenders named by Gullit deserved a chance with 78% voting for van Dijk, 12% for Douglas and 9% for Donk.

While van Dijk waits for his international debut team-mate Mikael Lustig was substituted at half time in Sweden’s 1-1 draw away to Montenegro with John Guidetti an unused substitute, Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored for the Swedes.
