Stevie FrailCeltic’s reserve side tumbled to a 2-0 defeat to Motherwell at Fir Park tonight.

Two well takes strikes in either half from Don Thomas separated the side’s as the Lanarkshire side avenged their recent Youth Cup defeat to Celtic at by the same scoreline.

Beram Kayal was the most experienced player in the Celtic side although Darnell Fisher and Liam Henderson enjoyed top team runs last season. With Eoghan O’Connell, Fiacre Kelleher and Stuart Findlay on international duty Filip Twardzik found himself playing at centre half alongside Jamie McCart.

There wasn’t much between the side in the first half with Kieran Tierney on the left carrying the main threat from the visitors.

Two minutes from half time Motherwell took the lead when Twardzik was caught in possession 40 yards from goal, Thomas eagerly took possession then raced in on goal before shooting across Leo Fasan into the corner of the net.

In the 55th minute Kayal cut in from the left and tested goalkeeper Ross Stewart with a low shot from 20 yards out but shortly afterwards Motherwell doubled their lead.

Stuart Carswell charged through the centre of the park before laying a perfectly weighted pass to Thomas who confidently angled his shot around Fasan from 18 yards out.

Celtic created a few half chances as they attempted to get back into the match but it took a great point blank save from Fasan in the 69th minute to prevent Dylan Mackin from putting Motherwell three up.

Paul George introduced a bit of spark into Celtic’s play when he replaced Paul McMullan but when his shot struck the post in the 81st minute it was obvious that it wasn’t to be Celtic’s night.

CELTIC: Fasan, Fisher (Breslin 46), Twardzik, McCart, Waters, Henderson, Lindsay, Kayal (Hill 74), Thomson, McMullan (George 68), Tierney
