TEN MEN WON THE LEAGUESome rare Celtic memorabilia will be up for auction later this month including items from Johnny Doyle.

Pride of place in the auction will be Doyle’s jersey from the 4-2 match in 1979 when he was sent off with ten man Celtic storming back to win the title.

Steven Murray’s recent book Ten Men Won the League has put the spotlight on that match which many would rate as the club’s greatest night since Lisbon.

Shirts from that era are much rarer than currently with players generally having one shirt to see them through the season.

Tragically Doyle died at his home in October 1981 with little in the way of memorabilia surviving with the auction, hosted by McTears also having his one and only Scotland jersey plus two medals up for grabs.

Brian Clements of McTear’s said: “Although Johnny Doyle was a hugely gifted player and made 118 appearances for Celtic, he only played once for Scotland, picking up his cap for a game against Romania in 1975. This fact alone makes both the Scotland Cap and jersey extremely rare pieces of sporting memorabilia.

“To have so many high quality items associated with such a famous player in one sale is quite remarkable and I am sure they will attract a lot of interest from football fans at home and overseas.”

Other items up for auction include shirts from Celtic’s centenary season as well as framed photographs and pictures recording Celtic’s greatest successes.

Doyle’s jersey is expected to be sold for between £2,000- £4,000.
