Beram KayalBrighton have confirmed the signing of Beram Kayal with the deal subject to a work permit.

The midfielder joined Celtic for £1.5m in the summer of 2010 but failed to maintain the levels of performance that his early displays hinted at.

Tonight on their twitter feed Brighton announced: “BREAKING NEWS: #BHAFC have agreed to sign Beram Kayal from Celtic, subject to work permit. He’s agreed deal to 2017.”

Brighton boss Chris Hughton said: “We’re delighted to have agreed a deal for someone of Kayal’s stature, he’s got plenty of experience with Celtic, and is an international.

“He is a good age and is a player who is really dynamic in midfield. He can play a few roles, including the holding role but he has the energy to break forward.

“He can play in a two or three-man midfield so that gives us flexibility there. He has been involved in some big games at Celtic and he will really give us another good option in midfield.”

Hughton took charge of Brighton last month after a run of poor results led to the sacking of Sami Hyypia.

During his four and a half years at Celtic Kayal only started 95 matches with injuries blighting much of his time in Glasgow including a hernia operation and dislocated shoulder during his first season.

That season saw Celtic win the Scottish Cup but Kayal missed out on a Hampden appearance due to dislocating his shoulder.

The arrival of Victor Wanyama saw Kayal drop down the pecking order but when the Kenyan moved to Southampton Kayal was unable to recapture past glories.

Ronny Deila’s arrival failed to give the 26-year-old’s career a boost with the last of his 13 appearances coming in the 2-1 home win over Dundee towards the end of November.

Kayal will leave Celtic with many memories with one of the strongest coming at Ibrox in January 2011 when an inspired performance alongside Joe Ledley paved the way for the hoops to win 2-0 with both goals coming from Georgios Samaras.

Brighton are at home to Arsenal tomorrow in the FA Cup with Kayal likely to make his debut next Saturday away to Blackpool.

In other transfer news John Herron has joined Cowdenbeath on loan with Paul McMullan going to Stenhousemuir until the end of the season.
