Football InternationalFormer Celt Michael Doyle is one step away from Wembley.

Tonight the midfielder will lead Sheffield United out against Spurs determined to overcome a 1-0 defeat at White Hart Lane to book a place in the Carling Cup Final against Chelsea.

Doyle joined Celtic from school in Dublin and is best known for his spell on loan at Aarhus alongside Liam Miller.

While Miller was winning plaudits in Martin O’Neill’s midfield during the 2003/04 season Doyle was making his mark at Coventry going on to make over 500 appearances for the Sky Blues, Leeds and now Sheffield United.

Nigel Clough’s side have beaten half a dozen Premiership side’s over the last two seasons but Doyle knows that one more win over Spurs would put all those other results in the shade.

“There’s a lot to play for and I’m sure Tottenham will be fired up,” the midfielder told the Herald, Dublin.

“They’ll look at our previous results and performances in other cup games and I’m sure they’ll take note of that. They won’t underestimate us, especially as we’ve come so far and they’ll be looking to finish it in the first leg, so we’ve got to be on our guard.

“I just hope we can keep the tie alive. If we can, coming back to Bramall Lane will give us a brilliant chance.”

Asked to explain his side’s cup exploits he added:“I haven’t got a clue to be honest with you, but since the Aston Villa game we’ve embraced everything about the cups and these ties.

“We’ve gone out with no fear in them and produced some of our best performances in a long time.

“The cup games have left people scratching their heads and asking why we can’t replicate that form in the league.”

Former Livingston striker, and Celtic fan, Marc McNulty will be looking to add to his ten goals for the season tonight, McNulty’s goals include strikes against Southampton and QPR.
