The strange demise of Thomas Rogne

Football InternationalNot too long ago Thomas Rogne was one of the Celtic’s finest prospects.

Signed for £100,000 from Stabaek in Norway the defender looked the real deal as he broke into the Celtic side in the middle of Tony Mowbray’s brief spell in charge.

Under Neil Lennon his progress seemed assured but his constant battle with various muscle injuries saw him dropping out of favour and his progress stall.

His place in the Celtic side for years to come seemed assured when he starred alongside Daniel Majstorovic at Ibrox in January 2011 as two goals from Georgios Samaras gave Celtic victory and hope.

A move to Wigan in 2013, turning down the offer of a contract from Celtic, could have provided a new beginning but unfortunately it has been more of the same for the defender who’ll be 25-year-old in June.

Three manager and fifteen appearances, just one this season, after moving to Wigan and Rogne is hoping that a move can be finalised this month to kick-start his career.

“I hope to continue abroad, I still have big ambitions,” he told a Norwegian website recently. “I feel good enough to play in one of the big leagues.

“It is all beyond my control, all I can do for now is train hard and try to perform in the reserves at Wigan. I have to make the most of things and hope that something happens soon.”

With two full caps to add to his collection at youth and u-21 levels Rogne really should be approaching the peak years of his career.

The promise that he hinted at during the early days of his career are long gone but the injury doubts remain.

Only once he has completed a full season, at whatever level, will the real Rogne be able to be assessed.
