Talks are continuing with Dundee United over a deal for Armstrong who was outstanding in the 2-1 win over Aberdeen to reach the League Cup Final.

A bid of close to £2m is likely to be accepted by the Tannadice board with the option to add in Gary Mackay-Steven also under discussion.

Mackay-Steven was voted man-of-the-match at Hampden and has signed a pre contract deal to join Celtic in the summer.

Talks for a new deal with Commons have progressed over the last week with the structure of a new two year deal to be ironed out.

The balance between basic and appearance money in the second year of the deal has still to be finalised but both parties are keen to get an agreement put in place.

Completing the deals for both players would be a major boost for Ronny Deila as he attempts to make his mark on the squad.

Armstrong has been identified as the identi-kit Deila player capable of playing any role in midfield and requiring minimum settling in time.

The midfielder will be 23 in March and although he is cup tied with Dundee United he would be eligible for the Europa League ties against Inter Milan.

With his contract due to expire in the summer of 2016 United realise that Armstrong’s value will decline as the summer transfer window opens.

United are in a strong position financially after the transfers of Ryan Gauld and Andy Robertson last season and are resigned to losing Armstrong.

Bringing in £2m will allow Jackie McNamara scope to operate in the transfer market in the summer.

The £170,000 paid to Sevco as compensation for Charlie Telfer is the only transfer fee that McNamara has spent in two seasons at Tannadice.
