Neil-DoncasterNeil Doncaster has described interest in Sunday’s Glasgow derby as extraordinary.

The former Norwich supremo attempted to provide Sevco with a place in the SPL during the summer of 2012 putting forward the view that liquidation was simply a way of shedding debt.

Warnings of Armageddon failed to frighten supporters who made it clear to their clubs that rolling out the red carpet to the new club from Ibrox was a non-starter.

Doncaster has been unable to find a sponsor for the new unified league set up but with a three match deal from QTS to sponsor the League Cup it seems like the good old days are back in town.

Speaking to the SPFL website Doncaster said: “We are all looking forward to two cracking semi-finals this weekend, starting with Dundee United v Aberdeen, which will command the biggest attendance for the fixture in nearly six decades, before Celtic v Rangers on Sunday.

“The interest in the Glasgow derby in particular has been extraordinary and this is reflected in the huge number of territories which will enjoy live coverage of the game, thanks to the SPFL’s partnership with international broadcast rights partner, MP & Silva.

“Many of these countries and regions show highlights of Scottish football throughout the season and this is another chance for us to continue to sell the game and increase interest throughout the world. It will also provide fantastic global exposure for QTS, presenting partners for the Scottish League Cup, who we thank for their support.”

It remains to be seen whether the upsurge in interest can be converted into tangible benefits for the Scottish game.
