Willie McStayWillie McStay is returning to Celtic as u-21 Head of Recruitment.

The newly created post will bridge the gap between the senior side of the club and the Academy structure.

Speaking on Radio Clyde he said: “I’ll be working with John Park and Chris McCart and look forward to this new job.”

McStay has had a number of jobs in recent times after leaving Celtic following the appointment of Neil Lennon as manager including being in charge of Ross County and Celtic Nation, assistant manager of Stockport County and u-21 coach at Bristol City.

During his final season at Celtic he spend nine months in Hungary managing Ujpest Dozsa.

After a playing career at Celtic, Huddersfield Town, Notts County and Kilmarnock he moved into management with Sligo Rovers where he won a treble including the FAI Cup.

In 1994 Tommy Burns brought his former Kilmarnock team-mate back to Celtic to head up the youth development side of the club.

During 14 years in that job he helped bring Aiden McGeady, Shaun Maloney, Darren O’Dea while others such as David Marshall, Ross Wallace, Craig Beattie and Mark Burchill were sold for substantial transfer fees.

In his new job McStay will be tasked with identifying and recruiting players capable of moving quickly through from the development side into first team players.

Tom Rogic and Holmbert Fridjonsson were the last two players brought in under that remit but have been unable to make the impact expected.

Bringing together the needs of the first team and the top end of the Academy structure promises to be a demanding job covering all areas of the club but with his background at the club and five years on the road there aren’t many candidates better suited for the job.
