Europa LeagueStuart Armstrong is adamant that Celtic should have been given a first half penalty against Inter Milan.

After a promising start Armstrong found himself in a good position inside the Inter box with a chance of getting a shot at goal.

Davide Santon felt the same and sent the midfielder crashing to the deck with referee Ivan Kruzliak of Slovakia giving one of many puzzling decisions by waving play on.

Asked if he was fouled, Armstrong said: “Of course, if there wasn’t (contact) I would have gone on and taken the shot. There’s no need to go down but I felt an arm on my shoulder and it put me off balance.

“It’s just the way it’s gone for us unfortunately. There’s a lot of disappointed boys in there feeling hard done by but it’s done now.”

Before the interval Celtic were reduced to ten men with Virgil van Dijk sent off after picking up two yellow cards.

I think we all saw it as a bit harsh,” Armstrong added about the Dutchman’s sending off. “The two yellow cards are not merited but it was what it was and it was an uphill battle from there. We just had to get on with it.

“We still created chances and probably should have tucked one away but of course the sending-off changed the game and we were on the back foot from there.”

An 87th minute goal from Fredi Guarin gave Inter a 4-3 win on aggregate. Elsewhere in the Europa League Liverpool and Spurs were knocked out by Besiktas and Fiorentina.
