Sunderland huddle

Celtic’s development side will face Manchester City for a place in the semi-final of the Premier League International Cup. A date has still to be set for the match.

The u-21 competition is in it’s first season with Celtic topping their group ahead of Villarreal, Sunderland and Everton.

Manchester City finished second to Leicester City in Group C with wins over Schalke 04 and Benfica.

In the 2010/11 season Celtic beat Manchester City home and away in the Next Gen Series with Tony Watt among the scorers.

The only other confirmed quarter-final is Chelsea against Fulham with Athletic Bilbao and Leicester City still waiting to find out their opponents.

Overage players are allowed in the competition with Leigh Griffiths scoring both of Celtic’s goals in the 2-1 win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. In the other group matches Filip Twardzik scored in the 1-1 draw away to Everton while Paul McMullan scored the only goal of the game to defeat Villarreal.

After recent experience in the Next Gen Series and in the u-19 Champions League the International Cup is giving the Celtic squad competitive experience against non-Scottish opponents.

Domestically Stevie Frail’s side have their work cut out to win the title for the sixth season running with Hamilton currently 18 points clear at the top having played five games more than Celtic.

Celtic are scheduled to play Hamilton on February 24 at New Douglas Park but with the two side’s meeting three days earlier in the SFA Youth Cup the league match is likely to be rescheduled.

On Monday of this week Celtic beat Partick Thistle 3-0 at Airdrie with the hoops scheduled to be back in action on Monday night, hosting Falkirk at Cappielow with a 7pm kick off.
