Mike AshleyMike Ashley is about to change his business model and indulge on a spending spree at Newcastle.

The Sports Direct Supremo has been heavily criticised for his cold hearted approach to the club while rival owners throw millions at the dream of success on the pitch.

Ashley’s eye for a deal has seen him add Sevco and Oldham Athletic to his business portfolio with the attraction being to tie up retail and advertising streams.

Some Sevco fans believed that Ashley would pump millions into the club to raise brand awareness through Champions League campaigns but that notion was quickly killed off when five crocks were sent to Ibrox during the January transfer window.

Claims that Ashley would sell Newcastle to fund his Sevco dream appear equally wide of the mark with caretaker manager John Carver revealing a change of plan at St James Park.

Previewing today’s match against Arsenal, Carver said: “Yes, the squad needs to be stronger and they have acknowledged that to me. Lee (Charnley, Newcastle CEO) and the board have acknowledged that, and that’s why I am saying to you now they are going to invest, because they know they have to.

“Ive spoken to Lee who has obviously spoken to Mike, and they acknowledge the fact that we’re a little bit short at the back and particularly at centre back. There’s a process in place, I’ve been involved in that process for a few weeks now, there’s big meeting in place in the next couple of weeks with Lee Charnley and Graham Carr (Newcastle’s chief scout) to talk about the future, and to talk about investment.

“I’ve seen who we are looking at and without going into detail there’s a lot of work going on behind the scenes. This football club will invest in the summer, because it needs it.”
