red cardCraig Thomson’s season to forget continued at Dens Park on Saturday.

With Aberdeen leading 1-0 a second goal before half-time would almost certainly have put the game beyond Dundee as the visitors dominated.

Four minutes from the break the Dons cut open the Dundee defence to present Niall McGinn with a shot at goal from 15 yards out.

As McGinn fired in his shot Willie Dyer’s arm went up blocking the striker’s shot- corner! Both sets of players looked amazed as Thomson failed to notice that it was Dyer’s arm that stopped the ball heading towards goal.

A penalty and a red card seemed the obvious outcome with Dundee having little to complain about but Thomson saw things differently.

“It was such a pivotal moment,” Derek McInnes said afterwards. “It’s a blatant penalty. It has cost us today because they’ve managed to get an equaliser after that.

“It’s not all down to the referee, though, that we haven’t won the game as we’re still in a good position at 1-0.

“We had an excellent start and Dundee were forced into playing like an away team.

“I thought we were in charge of the game but gave Dundee encouragement by being a bit ponderous in the second half.

“The only time they really threatened us in the first half was when we were guilty of giving away cheap possession. It’s something we spoke about at half-time.”

Thomson was in charge at Dens Park after being dropped by the SFA for the Scottish Cup replay between Celtic and Dundee United.

During the first match at Tannadice both side’s were incensed by a number of decisions with Paul Paton, Virgil van Dijk and Nadir Ciftci appearing in front of the SFA.

Thomson was also in charge of the League Cup semi-final between Celtic and Sevco where Lee McCulloch went unpunished for 90 minutes with Thomson bizarrely failing to play advantage when Leigh Griffiths was through on goal late in the first half with Celtic leading 2-0.
