Tom-RogicTom Rogic and Kieran Tierney made their returns from injury as Celtic’s development side beat Motherwell 2-0 at Cappielow.

With Darnell Fisher, Callum McGregor and Derk Boerrigter also included there was no shortage of experience in the home side with second half goals from Jamie Lindsay and Jaison McGrath separating the teams.

The match only passed an inspection an hour before kick-off with the rain continuing throughout the 90 minutes on what was once one of the most notorious swamps in Scottish football.

For Rogic it was his first Celtic outing in over a year after picking up an injury on loan to Melbourne Victory in a doomed attempt to make the Socceroos World Cup squad.

Tierney slotted in at left-back after breaking his ankle just before Christmas after making through to the substitute bench for the first team in the defeat to Dundee United.

Both players got 45 minutes and will be hopeful of better conditions to continue their attempts to get into Ronny Deila’s plans.

There was a few close calls around the Celtic goal in the opening period of the match but the hoops should have taken the lead in the 31st minute when McGregor was put through one-on-one but he hesitated for a moment with keeper Ross Stewart using his legs to block the shot.

McGregor was Celtic’s main attacking threat and forced the corner that opened the scoring in the 63rd minute with Lindsay drilling a low shot home from 20 yards after the corner had been cleared his way.

Motherwell pushed strongly for an equaliser but Leo Fasan was well protected in the Celtic goal.

Ten minutes from the final whistle McGrath doubled Celtic’s lead with a great run to the front post to convert a pass from Fisher after the full back had charged to the bye-line.

It was a hard earned victory for the young hoops, overcoming tricky opponents in testing conditions with the bonus of Rogic and Tierney stepping up their return to match fitness.

CELTIC: Fasan, Fisher, Tierney (Warprop 46), McCart, Breslin, Rogic (Hill 46), McGregor, Lindsay, McGrath, Thomson, Boerrigter (Nesbitt 61)
